The CIA warned Poland of potential Russian hybrid threats as well as a possible provocation involving the banking system, Newsweek’s Polish edition reports.

Newsweek journalists Dominika Długosz and Mariusz Gierszewski said the threat may involve undersea telecommunications infrastructure on which international financial systems depend. “The Russians have mapped out in great detail all the cables that are also used by the international banking system and run between Europe and America,” Gierszewski said.

Długosz said the infrastructure includes transatlantic links as well as cables running along the Baltic seabed between Scandinavia and Poland and between the U.K. and Europe.

According to Gierszewski, the U.S. advised Poland to prepare its banking system for such threats. “Interbank transactions totaling $10 trillion pass through these cables every day,” he said.
