After meeting U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov says Moscow won’t pause the war for Ukraine talks
Russia will not halt hostilities during any potential negotiations with Ukraine, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said.
“We will not pause the special military operation during negotiations in any format. Though that is precisely what Europe wants — all with the same straightforward aim: to get a breather and replenish the Kyiv regime’s depleted military stockpiles,” Lavrov said at a U.N. Security Council meeting.
Lavrov also said Russia was ready for talks aimed at achieving a “just peace” in Ukraine.
Before addressing the U.N. Security Council, Lavrov met with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly in New York. The meeting lasted about an hour.
Speaking to reporters afterward, Rubio said the U.S. had invited Russian President Vladimir Putin to the G20 summit in Miami in December and hoped he would accept. Rubio called reaching an energy ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine “a difficult task” but said Washington would try.
