United Russia secures constitutional majority in State Duma with 355 seats as election officials report record 59% turnout

Turnout in the election to the State Duma, the lower house of Russia’s parliament, reached 59.32%, according to Central Election Commission Head Ella Pamfilova.

“I’ve already mentioned several records, and now I want to mention one more, related to turnout. This record has specifically to do with the highest turnout in an election of this kind. You can see what turnout used to be in previous years at the State Duma deputy level, and now it has already exceeded that, more than 59%,” the Russian news agency Interfax quoted her as saying.

With 95.18% of precinct results counted, United Russia led the party-list vote with 57.83%, followed by Russia’s Communist Party (KPRF) at 13.81%, the LDPR at 8.98%, and New People at 7.96%. A Just Russia trailed with 4.96%, though Pamfilova said the party “has a good chance” of clearing the 5% threshold.

In the single-mandate districts, United Russia candidates were leading in 208 of 225 races. KPRF candidates led in five districts, A Just Russia and independent candidates in four apiece, LDPR in two, and Rodina in one.

According to Pamfilova, that preliminary count gives United Russia 355 seats in the State Duma (a constitutional majority requires 301 seats), with KPRF holding 40, the LDPR 25, New People 20, and A Just Russia four.

The result gives United Russia its largest faction in the State Duma’s history, surpassing the 343 deputies it won after the 2016 election.
