Germany’s AfD held talks with Gazprom CEO on resuming Russian gas supplies
The far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party is already in talks with Russia about resuming gas supplies. The party’s foreign policy spokesperson, Markus Frohnmaier, discussed the matter with Gazprom CEO Alexey Miller.
Beatrix von Storch, deputy chair of the AfD’s parliamentary group in the Bundestag, made that comment in response to a Reuters report on preparations for the talks:
Indeed, the media has reported on this. Our foreign policy spokesperson Markus Frohnmaier was in Moscow and personally spoke with Gazprom’s Miller. Of course, we’re interested in resuming trade. We need affordable energy and as broad a supply as possible, so we believe it’s in our interest to receive supplies from Russia as well, which is why we’re holding these talks.
Reuters reported on September 18 that AfD leadership was preparing to negotiate with Russia on resuming gas supplies. The meeting could take place as early as March 2027, but only if Russia and Ukraine reach agreement on the terms of a peace settlement by then.
The report said AfD co-chairs Alice Weidel and Tino Chrupalla could take part in the talks, with Kirill Dmitriev, head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund, representing Russia. Plans also call for bringing in Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner.
