State Duma candidate for Russia’s Green Party Yulia Kuznetsova disappears in Moscow

Yulia Kuznetsova, a State Duma candidate for the Russian Ecological Party “The Greens,” stopped answering calls on the evening of September 17, according to the project Slovo Zashchite (Word to the Defense).

The last time anyone reached her was after a meeting with voters in Sokolniki, when Kuznetsova said she was riding in a taxi with her husband and was 15 minutes from home. Her whereabouts have been unknown since, and her phone has been off.

A source on Kuznetsova’s team told SZ she may be held at a police station in Moscow’s Central Administrative district. Her husband’s phone briefly came online that morning, but no one was able to reach him. Her campaign staff believe it may have been hacked, or that he was forced to give someone access to it.

Kuznetsova’s campaign also reported that her observers had begun being removed from polling stations. The territorial election commission for Moscow’s Bogorodskoye district claims Kuznetsova herself withdrew them. Before she disappeared, Kuznetsova said a document bearing her signature had been forged.

Yulia Kuznetsova, who used the surname Kharchenko before marriage, opposes the war and is included in Smart Voting’s list of recommended candidates. She previously worked on Boris Nadezhdin’s campaign staff and ran in Moscow’s 2024 City Duma election, placing sixth in her district. Kuznetsova is now running for the State Duma, the lower house of Russia’s parliament, as a Green Party candidate in Moscow’s Babushkinsky single-mandate district No. 195.
