US House passes bill imposing ‘sanctions from hell’ on Russia

The U.S. House of Representatives has passed a bill imposing new sanctions on Russia, with 262 lawmakers voting in favor and 159 against.

Many Democratic lawmakers supported the bill, which the late Republican Senator Lindsey Graham had been lobbying for over the past year, according to CNN.

The Senate approved the bill in early August. American media have dubbed it the “sanctions bill from hell.” It now goes to President Donald Trump for his signature.

The bill authorizes the president to impose 100% tariffs on five countries that are among the largest buyers of Russian oil and gas. It doesn’t name those countries, but India and China are the biggest purchasers of Russian energy resources.

After the House passed the bill, India’s government published a statement saying it’s ready to take all necessary measures to protect its trade and economic interests. The statement said India will continue to safeguard its energy security, including by diversifying its energy supply sources.
