Authorities have declared a regional state of emergency in Taymyr after a diesel fuel spill in the settlement of Syndassko, the Krasnoyarsk Krai government reported.

The spill occurred on the morning of September 15, when a diesel fuel storage tank was damaged in Syndassko, on the shore of Khatanga Bay. Law enforcement sources in the region told the Russian state news agency TASS that a storm caused the accident, with rising water levels in Khatanga Bay flooding and damaging the tank on the coastline.

Between 170 and 200 tons of diesel fuel leaked from the tank, according to various estimates, and reached the bay, the region’s Emergency Situations Ministry reported.

Local authorities said there is no threat to residents’ life or health, and that the petroleum products have not entered the body of water from which Syndassko residents draw their water.

The tank belongs to Taymyr Alliance Trading (TAT), a Khatanga-based company that supplies electricity to several settlements. Investigators have opened a criminal case over violations of environmental protection rules governing the operation of industrial facilities, sources who spoke to TASS said.

Taymyr’s head, Alexey Chlenov, said “no obvious signs of environmental damage have been found.” He added that Syndassko’s power supply has not been disrupted, with fuel in reserve tanks expected to last 10 days.

Syndassko, one of Russia’s northernmost settlements, is home to about 500 people.
