France has backed Slovakia’s proposal to lift sanctions on Russian businessman Alisher Usmanov, unnamed European diplomats told Euronews.

European Union sanctions are renewed every six months, with the current deadline set for September 15. Slovakia has repeatedly called for the EU to remove Usmanov and Mikhail Fridman from its sanctions list.

France said it would support removing Usmanov from the list as a political compromise. Euronews said, however, that France’s stance would likely make negotiations more difficult.

The network’s sources said France’s position caused “huge frustration” among other EU countries.

Several days ago, another Russian businessman, Roman Abramovich, lost his third legal challenge to the sanctions in an EU court. He demanded the sanctions be lifted and sought compensation from the European Union for non-material damage.
