German foreign minister proposes sharing data on military-age Ukrainian men living in Germany with Kyiv

Ukrainian men of military age living in Germany should return to Ukraine, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said in an interview with a podcast published by the German newspaper Bild.

Wadephul said the German government could help Kyiv track them down. “We know who lives here, who receives welfare payments, for example, who is registered here, who has residency status,” he said.

Ukraine’s government could use that data to notify men of military age that they must report for service, he said. “I think this can be discussed, and that it needs to be discussed,” the German foreign minister added.

Berlin also wants Ukraine to place more defense orders with German defense companies.

“We are Ukraine’s biggest supporter in terms of financial and military assistance. And naturally, the German defense industry should benefit from that. […] At the moment we are not entirely satisfied with the volume of orders being placed in Germany. So we have now asked the Ukrainian government to look into this and ensure the situation improves,” Wadephul said.

German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius announced a day earlier that Germany would send Ukraine part of its own stockpile of PAC-2 interceptor missiles for American-made Patriot air defense systems. “I am aware that it is not easy to strike a balance between one’s own security requirements and urgently needed support for Ukraine. But please: if in doubt, decide in favor of Ukraine,” he said.
