Vladimir Putin spoke by phone with Donald Trump for exactly one hour in a conversation that was “constructive and candid,” Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov said. According to Ushakov, the two leaders discussed Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner’s trips to Moscow and Kyiv.

Ushakov said the Kremlin viewed the outcome of the U.S. negotiators’ visit to Russia positively and that work through that channel would continue.

Ushakov said Trump is interested in achieving a breakthrough in efforts to end the war in Ukraine during his term. According to Ushakov, Trump said ending the war was a condition for fully restoring relations between Russia and the United States and that restoring those ties could bring “colossal benefits” to both sides.

According to Ushakov, Putin praised U.S. mediation efforts and said Russia “has no aggressive plans toward Europe whatsoever.” Ushakov said the call was positive overall.

U.S. officials have not yet commented on the substance of the call.
