Russia to close Germany’s consulate in St. Petersburg

Russia has withdrawn its consent for Germany’s consulate general to operate in St. Petersburg, the Russian Foreign Ministry announced.

The consulate is to close on September 18, and its staff must leave the country by the same date.

The ministry also formally declared the closure of Goethe-Institut branches in Russia, a move Sergey Lavrov, the ministry’s head, had already announced several days earlier. Goethe-Institut staff must leave Russia by September 13.

“Responsibility for the fallout from this new round of escalation in relations between Russia and Germany lies entirely with Berlin,” the Foreign Ministry stated.

Germany announced on September 1 that it would close Russia’s consulate in Bonn and shut down the “Russian House” in Berlin. The move came in response to an act of sabotage at Leipzig Airport, in which drones carrying explosives attacked a Ukrainian transport plane. German authorities formally blamed Russia for the attack.
