An avalanche swept through a group of 33 climbers in the Bezengi Gorge in Kabardino-Balkaria, breaking loose from Mount Mizhirgi around 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 6.

By Monday morning, September 7, 11 people were confirmed dead and six injured. Ten climbers managed to get out on their own, while efforts to find the remaining six were continuing.

TASS, the Russian state news agency, reported that 56 people are taking part in the search-and-rescue operation, citing the regional branch of the Emergency Situations Ministry. The terrain in the operation area is difficult, the agency said, and the risk of further avalanches remains.
