Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky promised in his evening video address that Kyiv would ensure “normal functioning of Russian airspace” while American negotiators Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner visit Moscow.

According to Zelensky, Witkoff and Kushner will visit Moscow first, then travel to Kyiv on Sunday, September 6.

“Just as we did during previous diplomatic visits by the American side, we will ensure the normal functioning of Russian airspace so that the negotiators can arrive safely. We are looking out for them, not for Russia. There will be no air strikes from our side,” Zelensky said.

Zelensky said Russia should also halt its airstrikes during the talks between Kyiv and Washington.

Witkoff and Kushner have traveled to Moscow for talks before but have yet to visit Kyiv.

The negotiators plan to arrive by plane, according to reports from the Ukrainian news outlet The Kyiv Independent. Sources had previously said that Witkoff finds it “difficult” to travel by train, citing this as one reason American negotiators have not visited Ukraine. Kyiv’s skies have been closed since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion; foreign delegations travel to the Ukrainian capital by rail.
