An officer with Russia’s Aerospace Forces was shot in an assassination attempt in the Saratov region, according to Mash, Baza, and Shot, Telegram channels with ties to Russia’s security services. The officer was hospitalized in serious condition. Russia’s Investigative Committee, the country’s federal investigating authority, has opened a criminal case over the attempted murder, the Russian state news agency TASS reported.

The Telegram channel Dosye Shpiona (“Spy’s Dossier”) identifies the victim as Major General Nikolai Varpakhovich, commander of the 22nd Heavy Bomber Aviation Division within Russia’s Aerospace Forces’ long-range aviation branch. That information has not been officially confirmed.

The attack took place the morning of September 3, when the attacker rode up on a motorcycle to a private house — according to Shot, a store the officer had just left — in the village of Probuzhdenie, near the city of Engels. He fired two shots at Varpakhovich with a pistol before fleeing.

One bullet struck Varpakhovich in the abdomen, the other in the head; doctors removed both at the hospital. He is now being prepared for transport to Moscow. His driver was also wounded but managed to escape and call an ambulance.

Ukraine’s Security Service and the country’s Prosecutor General’s Office announced August 31 that they had named Nikolai Varpakhovich a suspect in absentia. Investigators believe he personally ordered the missile strike on Kyiv’s Okhmatdyt children’s hospital on July 8, 2024. At the time of the strike, the hospital had more than 600 patients and roughly the same number of staff members. Two people were killed.
