Car bomb reportedly kills Russian military officer in St. Petersburg
An improvised explosive device detonated inside a car on Kolpinskoye Highway in St. Petersburg, according to the St. Petersburg-based news outlet Fontanka.
A serviceman and his wife were in the car, according to the outlet. The man, who held the rank of lieutenant colonel, was killed at the scene, while his wife was hospitalized. Fontanka claimed the blast tore off both of their legs.
The explosion occurred on the morning of August 27 near a Magnit store. Witnesses said the device detonated around 10 a.m. as the serviceman and his wife were pulling away from their home.
The blast occurred in a neighborhood that has been actively developed with housing for military personnel, according to the independent Russian investigative outlet Agentstvo. Vladimir Putin, then serving as prime minister, visited the area in 2010 to inspect apartments being built for service members.
