Fire at Russia’s Amur Gas Chemical Complex kills seven; nine Chinese nationals still missing

Seven people have died in a fire at the construction site of the Amur Gas Chemical Complex (AGCC), which is being prepared for launch, the plant’s press service reported in updated figures: six Chinese nationals and a Russian woman. Nine more Chinese nationals, employees of a contractor, are listed as missing.

The fire left 152 people injured, 36 of whom were hospitalized with injuries of varying severity.

The fire at AGCC began on August 25, and it took nearly a day to bring under control.

The blaze broke out in an auxiliary process area of the pyrolysis unit, and the complex’s main equipment was not damaged, the plant’s press service reported, citing preliminary information.

The Amur Gas Chemical Complex is one of the world’s largest polyethylene and polypropylene plants currently under construction. It had been scheduled to produce its first output in the third quarter of 2026.
