Detentions begin outside Russia’s Supreme Court as anti-war Yabloko party fights to stay on the ballot
Update: At least 35 people had been detained outside the Supreme Court building by noon, Yabloko said. Kirill Goncharov, chairman of Yabloko’s Moscow branch, said police were taking one group of more than 20 detainees to the Khamovniki police station and another group of 15 to the Arbat police station. “People were being detained without grounds or cause,” he said.
Police detained several people outside the Supreme Court building in Moscow ahead of an August 17 hearing on Yabloko’s appeal against the removal of the party’s federal list from the elections.
RTVI and the Telegram channel Slovo Zashchite wrote about at least two detentions. Slovo Zashchite separately reported the detention of Yabloko activist Yevgenia Titova.
The hearing, which will address Yabloko’s appeal, will be open to the public but will not be broadcast, the Supreme Court’s press service announced.
On August 10, Russia’s Supreme Court removed Yabloko’s federal list from the elections to the State Duma, the lower house of Russia’s parliament, acting on a lawsuit filed by the Rodina party. One of the grounds cited was donations to Yabloko’s account from individuals who had previously received money transfers from abroad; Russia’s Federal Financial Monitoring Service estimated the total at 16,900 rubles.
Yabloko Chairman Nikolai Rybakov said there were no grounds for excluding the party from the elections and vowed that Yabloko would prove it.
