Third major Russian Black Sea grain terminal halts operations after Ukrainian attack

The KSK grain terminal in Novorossiysk, a key hub for Russian grain exports, has halted operations, according to its owner, the Delo Group.

“The terminal is halting the unloading of trucks and railcars, the loading of grain onto ships, and other operations. The decision was made to ensure the safety of workers and infrastructure,” the terminal’s operator said in a statement.

KSK is the last of Novorossiysk’s major grain terminals still operating, according to the independent Russian media outlet The Bell.

Two other terminals in Novorossiysk — the Novorossiysk Bread Products Plant, an OZK Group subsidiary, and the Novorossiysk Grain Terminal, owned by Demetra-Holding — had already stopped operating the day before, the Reuters news agency reported, citing industry sources.

The three terminals have a combined capacity of 26.1 million tons (28.8 million U.S. tons), which The Bell says typically accounts for well over half of Russia’s wheat exports.

Ukraine attacked the port of Novorossiysk overnight on August 12 in what Kyiv officials called a “unique” combined assault involving drones, missiles, and autonomous sea boats, damaging several Russian naval vessels as well.

Authorities in Krasnodar Krai reported the attack damaged 60 residential buildings in Novorossiysk. Drones also struck Gelendzhik, and across Krasnodar Krai as a whole, three people were killed, including an 8-year-old child.
