Russian Navy officer reportedly killed in bomb blast in occupied Sevastopol

A local resident died in an explosion in occupied Sevastopol, according to Mash and Baza, Telegram channels close to Russian security services.

According to those reports, the blast occurred on the morning of August 13 in a park behind a residential area on Stoletovsky Avenue. Witnesses said the man was climbing a staircase with a friend when the explosion occurred. According to preliminary reports, the explosive device had been planted in a trash bin next to a bench.

The Telegram channels did not identify the victim.

The anonymous Russian Telegram channel VChK-OGPU claims the man killed was Robert Shageev, an officer in Russia’s Navy. Blogger Anatoly Shariy has reported the same claim, which has not been independently confirmed. The Telegram channel 112 reported that a captain 1st rank was killed in the blast but did not name him.

Shageev previously commanded the Ukrainian submarine Zaporizhzhia before defecting to Russia in 2014, after Moscow’s annexation of Crimea. Ukrainian authorities have opened a criminal case against him on treason charges.
