The Yalta administration has begun installing outdoor cooking areas in the courtyards of apartment buildings, the city’s Russian-installed authorities announced. The independent Russian outlet Agentstvo first reported the announcement.

The administration said the cooking areas are being installed near buildings that are not connected to the gas network. Sergey Olefirenko, the Yalta administration’s first deputy head, said, “It’s impossible to cover more than 1,500 buildings in a day, but the work has started.”

Olefirenko also said the city administration is negotiating with local business owners to prepare meals for residents at cost.

An energy, logistics and fuel crisis has plagued the peninsula for several weeks, caused by a Ukrainian military campaign aimed at isolating Crimea.

Yalta was the first city in Crimea to announce communal courtyard kitchens because of the power outages.
