Roscosmos institute scientist arrested in Moscow on treason charges

Moscow’s Meshchansky Court has arrested Maxim Kravchuk, a 35-year-old scientist, on treason charges, the Russian Telegram news channel Ostorozhno Novosti and the Russian business news outlet RBC reported.

Kravchuk was detained on June 24 — his birthday — though the case only became public recently. He appealed his arrest in late June.

The substance of the case is unknown; all treason cases are classified.

According to Ostorozhno Novosti, Kravchuk is an aerodynamics specialist at TsNIImash, a Moscow research institute that operates under Roscosmos.

The independent Russian investigative outlet Agentstvo found that Kravchuk traveled to Ukraine twice between 2016 and 2019.

Ostorozhno Novosti notes that Maxim Kravchuk is at least the fourth scientist from TsNIImash to face treason charges since 2019. His case is also the seventh known criminal prosecution of a scientist who worked in the defense sector since the start of the full-scale war between Russia and Ukraine, according to a count by Agentstvo.
