Protests over dismissal of Ukraine’s defense minister continue over weekend

Hundreds of Kyiv residents gathered again outside the Ivan Franko Theater on the evening of July 19 to protest the dismissal of Mykhailo Fedorov as defense minister.

A correspondent for the TSN television channel estimated several hundred people had filled the square. Demonstrators also called for the resignation of Armed Forces Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi and for reforms in the military.

Protests were also underway in Kharkiv, Dnipro, Mykolaiv, and Odesa.

Ukraine’s government resigned en masse on July 14. Some ministers were reappointed; Yevhenii Khmara replaced Mykhailo Fedorov at the head of the Defense Ministry.

Fedorov said himself that his removal stemmed from a conflict with Armed Forces Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi. The Financial Times and Meduza have reported that President Volodymyr Zelensky is considering dismissing Syrskyi as well.

Protests against Fedorov’s dismissal have been taking place in Ukraine since July 16.
