Ukraine’s parliament approved on first reading a bill toughening penalties for distributing and acquiring child sexual abuse material while decriminalizing adult pornography.

The bill passed 231 to 8, with three abstentions. The voting process was broadcast in a live stream of the plenary session.

The legislation, Ukrainian media reported, includes a provision that would increase prison sentences to as much as 15 years for child pornography crimes committed by organized groups or by people entrusted with a child’s care or supervision.

If enacted, the law would also decriminalize the production of pornographic material involving consenting adults, along with its distribution to adult audiences.

The bill’s authors have said one of its goals, according to the Ukrainian news outlet Ekonomichna Pravda, is to fight corruption among law enforcement officers.
