Ukraine strikes the Omsk oil refinery, Russia’s largest, forcing a shutdown

Source: Reuters

Ukrainian drones struck the Omsk oil refinery on July 6, halting operations at the facility, the Reuters news agency reported, citing sources.

The attack set fire to and damaged the CDU-10 primary oil distillation unit, which handles about 38 percent of the refinery’s capacity, according to Reuters’ sources.

A second unit, CDU-11, which accounts for 37 percent of the facility’s capacity, was also taken offline after the strike damaged supporting infrastructure. That unit could be back in service within a few days.

As of July 7, the Omsk refinery stopped selling gasoline and diesel fuel on the St. Petersburg International Mercantile Exchange (SPIMEX), Reuters said.

The Omsk oil refinery — Russia’s largest by volume of oil processed — is located 2,500 kilometers from the border with Ukraine.
