Russian schoolchildren evacuated during end-of-school exam over drone threat, test rescheduled

Ninth-graders in Voronezh were unable to sit the Basic State Exam (OGE) on June 16 after a drone strike threat prompted evacuations at all 54 exam sites across the city.

Students sheltered for more than two hours, until noon, when the Voronezh region Education Ministry decided to reschedule the OGE.

“Holding the exam that day was deemed inadvisable. The measure is necessary to protect the psychological wellbeing of the children and to ensure equal conditions for all participants,” the regional government’s press service said.

In Novovoronezh, the exam was interrupted and briefly resumed before a new drone warning forced officials to call it off for the day, the Russian news agency Interfax reported.

Voronezh Governor Alexander Gusev said on the morning of June 16 that 19 drones had been shot down over the region overnight. Six more were downed in the first half of the day, he said.
