International Gymnastics Federation lifts ban on Russian athletes competing under national flag and anthem

The International Gymnastics Federation has lifted its ban on athletes from Russia and Belarus, allowing them to compete under their national flag and anthem. The restrictions had been in place since February 2022.

The federation’s executive committee voted to lift the ban at a meeting in Sharm el-Sheikh on May 16–17. The decision is now in effect.

It covers all five disciplines under the Gymnastics Federation of Russia: artistic gymnastics, rhythmic gymnastics, trampoline jumping, sports acrobatics, and aerobic gymnastics, the Russian sports newspaper Sovetsky Sport reports.

Sports acrobatics athletes will be the first to compete under the Russian flag, at a World Cup stage scheduled for May 29–31 in Burgas, Bulgaria.

Russian gymnasts were banned from competitions under the auspices of the International Gymnastics Federation in 2022, and from 2024 they competed under neutral status, Sports.ru recalls.
