A cargo ship carrying wheat sank in the Sea of Azov off the coast of the Kherson region, according to Vladimir Saldo, the Russia-appointed head of the occupied part of the region.

Nine crew members were found on shore, all Russian citizens. The first mate, born in 1991, was killed. Two others are missing.

The cause of the sinking has not been reported.

“Local residents were the first to help — they met the crew and assisted them on shore before emergency services arrived. The circumstances of the incident are being established, and investigative measures are underway,” Saldo said.

The Russian state news agency TASS, citing a source, reported that a drone attacked the cargo ship, killing two people. The vessel was located 30 miles north of Kerch. The crew evacuated into a life capsule and made it to the Kherson region.
