During Alexey Navalny’s funeral on Friday, his mother-in-law, Alla Abrosimova, addressed the crowd gathered at Moscow’s Borisovskoye Cemetery. The Feminist Anti-war Resistance movement published a video of her speech.

Abrosimova recounted how she met Navalny 25 years ago: “[Then], my daughter said he was the most wonderful man. There probably isn’t anyone else like him.” She also called on the media to stop “spreading lies” about the relationship between her daughter, Yulia, and Navalny’s mother, Lyudmila Navalnaya.

Because through the end of [Navalny’s] life, these two wonderful, courageous, strong women — Lyudmila [Navalnaya], Alexey’s mom, and Yulia — they were always together, always in touch. They are truly courageous women who loved him endlessly. Today, Yulia called me 10 times. ‘You tell him directly that I love him immensely. Although you don’t have to say it, because he already knows.’ […] And you know, he found happiness somewhere, because not everyone is fortunate enough to love and be loved like that.

Alla Abrosimova also thanked everyone who came out to pay their respects to Navalny: “A huge thanks that there are so many good, young people who sincerely loved Alexey, who have been standing here in the cold all day, waiting to say goodbye to Alexey. A huge thank you to all of you; our family extends its deepest gratitude to you.”

On March 1, Russian opposition leader Alexey Navalny was buried at Moscow’s Borisovskoye Cemetery. Navalny’s widow, daughter, and son all live outside of Russia and were unable to attend the funeral.
