A New York court sentenced Charles McGonigal, a former FBI agent, to 50 months in prison for aiding Russian oligarch Oleg Deripaska, who is sanctioned by the U.S., reports Voice of America.

McGonigal is also required to pay a $40,000 fine. He was found guilty of conspiring to violate sanctions.

“Today’s sentence is a reminder that anyone who violates United States sanctions — particularly those in whom this country has placed its trust — will pay a heavy penalty,” the judge said during the sentencing.

McGonigal was accused of working for Deripaska to find compromising material about rival oligarch Vladimir Potanin. During the trial, he admitted that he acted on Deripaska’s instructions and that he received concealed payments from him.
