Ukraine’s military says they have taken the village of Staromaiorske in one of the main directions of the offensive in the south of the country. President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky posted video footage of Ukrainian service members’ announcement on his Telegram channel.
Hanna Maliar, Deputy Minister of Defense for Ukraine, confirmed that Staromaiorske had been liberated.
“Our defenders continue to protect the settlement now,” Maliar wrote on Telegram.
The liberation of Staromaiorske and neighboring Priiutnoe, which is currently still under Russian control, would allow Ukraine’s Armed Forces to attack a nearby Russian fortified area from three sides. That could force Russian troops further south, to a second line of defense.
