Andrei Kartapolov, head of the State Duma Committee on Defense, announced that the lower limit for the age of conscription would remain the same, while the upper limit would be raised. That means that males between 18 and 30 years old will be eligible for the biannual draft.

Earlier the plan had been that both the upper and lower limits would be raised, making males between 21 and 30 eligible.

“The main amendment is that the upper limit will become 30 years old. It was decided to leave the lower limit of the conscription age at 18 years old, because a lot of guys want to go to serve exactly at 18,” Kartapolov is quoted as saying.

The new rules will take effect starting with the spring 2024 draft, the fall draft of 2023 will not be affected.
