The G7 countries have announced security guarantees for Ukraine and promised to provide ongoing military support, reported Japan’s Prime Minister Fumio Kishida during a joint briefing with U.S. president Joe Biden and Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky.

According to AFP, the G7 countries promised to work with Ukraine on “specific, bilateral, long-term security commitments and arrangements towards ensuring a sustainable force capable of defending Ukraine now and deterring Russian aggression in the future.”

The G7 reported that they plan to provide Ukraine with “modern military equipment, across land, air, and sea domains.” This includes “prioritizing air defence, artillery and long-range fires, armored vehicles, and other key capabilities, such as air combat,” reads the statement. The countries promised to provide Ukraine with military and financial assistance “in the event of future Russian armed attack,” and “to impose economic and other costs on Russia” if the Russian leadership starts a new war after the currents one ends.

According to Zelensky’s chief of staff, Andriy Yermak, the declaration itself is a working document. Next, Ukraine must come to an agreement with the G7 countries regarding security assurances in bilateral talks. Yermak says, “the declaration’s key message is that it confirms the fact that Ukraine’s security is a part of the Euro-Atlantic region’s security.”

Zelensky’s office posted the official G7 declaration to its website.
