Russia launches ‘largest drone attack yet’ on Kyiv, killing at least one person

On May 28, Russian troops attacked Kyiv using Iranian-made Shahed drones. According to local authorities, it was the largest attack on Kyiv since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. On May 28, the city celebrates Kyiv Day.

“This was the 14th airstrike on the capital since the start of May! Today, the enemy decided to ‘congratulate’ the residents of Kyiv on Kyiv Day with the help of their deadly drones. This has been the largest drone attack on our capital since the start of the full-scale invasion, more specifically, using the Shahed [drones]. The attack was carried out in several waves, and the air raid lasted for over five hours,” reported the Kyiv City Military Administration head Serhii Popko.

According to Ukraine's Air Force Command, Russian troops launched 54 Shahed drones into Ukrainian territory from Russia’s Bryansk and Krasnodar regions. Most of the drones were directed at Kyiv. Air defense systems were able to shoot down 52 of the drones.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported that explosions were heard in the city’s Solomianskyi, Sviatoshynskyi, Pecherskyi, Holosiivskyi, and Obolonskyi districts.

In the Pecherskyi district, a fire broke out on a roof after drone debris fell on a nine-story building. In the Solomianskyi region, debris fell on a seven-story non-residential building, where a fire also occurred. A 41-year-old man was killed and a 35-year-old woman was hospitalized with injuries.

In the Holosiivskyi region, a fire damaged a warehouse, a shopping and entertainment complex, and a construction site. There was also some damage in the Pecherskyi and Darnytskyi districts.
