The commander of the Russian Navy’s Pacific Fleet, Admiral Sergey Avakyants, has been removed from his post, according to Vladimir Putin’s envoy to the Far Eastern Federal District.

Avakyants will reportedly head up a new office that will oversee military training and patriotic education centers.

According to state news agency RIA Novosti, Admiral Viktor Liina, who has served as commander of Russia’s Baltic Fleet since 2021, is being considered to replace Avakyants.

Avakyants has led the Pacific Fleet since 2012. His departure comes less than a week after the Navy conducted a combat readiness inspection of the fleet.

The Pacific Fleet has not commented on the announcement.
