A St. Petersburg woman visited the grave of Vladimir Putin’s long-dead parents, leaving them a note allegedly containing a death wish for the Russian President. She is now facing criminal charges.

The 60-year-old Irina Tsybaneva visited the cemetery on October 6, said her son, Maxim Psybanev, to Mediazona. It is not completely clear what she wrote in the note she placed on the grave of Putin’s dead parents. Tsybaneva only said that it contained a death wish.

In the morning on October 10, a policeman came to Tsybaneva’s apartment and escorted her to the police station, where she was held until the next day. On October 11, the detainee was brought to the Primorsky District Court. Her state-appointed defense lawyer, Sergey Tarusov, says that she is facing charges under Article 244, part 2b of the Criminal Code — namely, “desecrating the bodies of the deceased and their places of burial, committed for motives of political, ideological, racial, national, or religious hatred and enmity.”

The investigation has petitioned for Tsybaneva’s arrest. The court dismissed the pleading, extending Tsybaneva’s detention by another 48 hours.
