Putin establishes commission for historical education headed by ex-Culture Minister Vladimir Medinsky

Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a decree on establishing an interdepartmental commission for historical education. This document was published on the government’s legal information portal on Friday, July 30.

The commission was created for the purpose of “ensuring a systematic and offensive approach to the issue of upholding the national interests of the Russian Federation related to the preservation of historical memory and the development of educational activities in the field of history.”

More specifically, the commission will coordinate the activities of government agencies and the academic community to develop a unified approach to historical education, prevent attempts to “falsify history,” and analyze the activities of foreign organizations that “damage Russia’s national interests in the historical field.”

Putin’s aide and former Culture Minister Vladimir Medinsky has been appointed as the head of the commission.
