Investigation ongoing after Russian soldier found dead in Armenia

A Russian serviceman has been found dead in Armenia, the state news agency TASS reported on Thursday, November 26, citing spokespeople for Russia’s Southern Military District.

The body of a serviceman showing no signs of life was found by a colleague at a place of residence outside of the military unit’s territory. No signs of violence were found on the soldier’s body.

The circumstances surrounding the death have yet to be established. An investigation into the incident is ongoing, military spokespeople told TASS.

The Russian 102nd Military Base has garrisons in Gyumri and Yerevan. Russia also sent nearly 2,000 peacekeepers to Nagorno-Karabakh after Armenia and Azerbaijan signed a ceasefire agreement on November 10, ending renewed hostilities in the unrecognized republic. 

On November 23, Russia’s Defense Ministry reported that a Russian peacekeeper was injured in a mine explosion in Nagorno-Karabakh.
