Russia records highest daily increase in COVID-19 cases in three months

Russia has recorded 7,212 new coronavirus cases in the past day, reported the operational headquarters for the fight against COVID-19 on Friday, September 25. This is the highest daily increase since June 28, when 7,658 people in Russia were diagnosed with the disease.

The majority of these newly diagnosed cases were detected in Moscow, where 1,560 people tested positive for the disease — that’s 510 more than the day before (September 24). Other parts of the country leading in the number of new coronavirus infections include St. Petersburg (up 224 cases), as well as the Moscow Region (+208), Rostov Region (+187), and Nizhny Novgorod Region (+168).

In addition,108 people have died of the coronavirus in the past 24 hours, while 4,317 have recovered.

Russia has recorded a total of 1,136,048 coronavirus cases during the pandemic so far. This number includes 20,056 deaths and 934,146 recoveries. The number of active cases is currently 181,846.

Russia has conducted more than 44.3 million coronavirus tests over the course of the pandemic (upwards of 374,000 per day).

Also today, the Moscow authorities urged people over the age of 65 and those suffering from chronic diseases to stay home starting on September 28. In addition, the authorities have asked employers to transfer as many of their employees as possible to remote work. Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin asked for strict compliance with the mask and glove requirements on public transport, in shops, and other public places.
