Former Russian Open Government Minister Mikhail Abyzov said during an October 24 court hearing that one of his children has fled Russia to avoid being seized by child protection officers. Abyzov was jailed in spring 2019 on charges of fraud and forming a criminal organization during his time in Russia’s federal executive branch.
The former minister said it was his middle son, a legal minor, who left Russia for the United States. “This is a major personal tragedy for him because he can’t imagine his life outside Russia,” Abyzov said.
Abyzov also reminded the court that he has also been unable to pay child support for two children from a previous marriage because his assets have been frozen.
