Ukraine carried out a missile attack on the Sevastopol Shipyard overnight on September 13, reported Russia’s Defense Ministry and Mikhail Razvozhayev, head of annexed Sevastopol, a city on the Crimean peninsula.
According to the ministry’s information, Ukraine fired 10 cruise missiles and three naval drones at the shipyard and ships belonging to Russia’s Black Sea fleet.
The Russian army said that air defense systems shot down seven missiles, while the patrol ship Vasily Bykov destroyed all the naval drones. Russia’s Defense Ministry said that two Ukrainian cruise missiles damaged two ships undergoing repair.
Razvozhayev said that a fire broke out at the south of the shipyard. According to preliminary information, 24 people were injured in the attack.
The Telegram channels Baza and Shot reported that 26 shipyard workers were injured, and that two others were killed. No deaths have been officially reported. The channels say that the Minsk landing ship and the Rostov-on-Don B-237 submarine, both undergoing repair, were damaged.
Open-source intelligence analysts MT Anderson and OSINTtechnical write that the Ukrainian military attacked the Sevastopol Shipyard’s dry docks, where a Kilo-class submarine and a Ropucha-class landing ship were reportedly located.
MT Anderson posted satellite imagery that indicates the ships were located in Sevastopol on the morning of September 12. OSINTtechnical also noticed that the Minsk landing ship was on fire in photographs posted by Razvozhayev.
A speaker for Ukraine’s Main Intelligence Directorate, Andriy Yusov, also reported that a large Russian landing ship and a submarine were hit in Sevastopol. He didn’t say which specific ships were damaged.
Commander of the Ukrainian Air Force Mykola Oleshchuk hinted that the attack on Sevastopol was carried out by Ukraine. “Thank you to the pilots of the Ukrainian Air Force for their excellent combat performance,” he wrote on his Telegram channel.
Ukrainian media said the Rostov-on-Don submarine was one of the vessels involved in the Russian attack on the Ukrainian city of Vinnytsia on July 14, 2022, which killed 27 people in the city center.
On X (formerly known as Twitter), users drew attention to a Starlink outage that occurred at the alleged time of the Ukrainian attack on Sevastopol.
According to the Sevastopol Shipyard’s website, it is the largest enterprise for the repair and construction of ships and vessels of various classes in Russian-annexed Crimea.
