Russian President Vladimir Putin called Elon Musk, the founder of SpaceX, a “genius.” SpaceX is developing Starlink, a global satellite internet network. Putin brought up Musk while touring an exhibition on the sidelines of the Russia–Africa summit, where he was shown a satellite from Russia’s answer to Starlink, the Rassvet constellation. Putin also said that Russia remained “in close contact” with U.S. partners, including Musk, “despite political differences,” because it was “important not to interfere with each other” in orbit. Putin made the remarks after access to Starlink satellite communications, which are critical to Ukrainian forces on the front lines, was restricted. Musk said the restrictions stemmed from concerns that Russia might shoot down SpaceX satellites.
