On July 6, graduates of St. Petersburg State University’s journalism department organized a demonstration in support of journalist Elena Milashina, who was severely beaten in Chechnya earlier this week. At their graduation ceremony, two students unfurled a sign with a portrait of Milashina and the words “The face of Russian journalism.” “Through our protest, we wanted to support Elena Milashina on behalf of concerned graduates. Fingers broken in 14 places: that’s the price right now for conveying the truth to people,” one of the students told Novaya Gazeta. The demonstration reportedly lasted 25 minutes and ended when someone called the police.
