On November 5, the Council on the Russian Language held a hearing in the Kremlin. During his opening address for the event, President Vladimir Putin reminded attendees that Russia carries a “tremendous responsibility for the preservation, development, and expansion of the Russian language and Russian literature.” He also said that some areas of the world have seen attempts to artificially suppress the use of the Russian language, though he did not name any specific countries. In the course of his address, Putin also listed the groups he sees as the Russian language’s central foes. His speech was livestreamed by the state-owned television channel RT.
