Russian activists step up for second week of global climate strikes

Source: Meduza

Protesters in 20 Russian cities joined a global strike for climate action on September 27. Most of the Russian strikes built on previous efforts by local activists to organize individual pickets or receive official permits for small group pickets. However, one group of activists met in Moscow’s Krasnaya Presnya soccer stadium to launch a “creative protest action” in front of the White House, the home of the Russian government’s executive branch. The September 27 protests followed Russia’s ratification of the Paris Agreement on climate: Activists have noted that despite the ratification, their government has yet to take meaningful steps toward staving off climate breakdown. The groups demanding that the Russian government “act now” included the country’s national branches of Greenpeace, Fridays for Future, Extinction Rebellion, 350.org, and the Climate Action Network as well as the Russian Social-Ecological Union.
