Russia has likely modified the ballistic missiles it is using against Ukraine so they can evade the Patriot air defense system, the Financial Times reported, citing Ukrainian and Western officials.

The upgrades are believed to involve the Iskander-M ballistic missile system, which has a range of up to 500 kilometers (310 miles), as well as the air-launched Kinzhal ballistic missile, with a range of up to 480 kilometers (298 miles).

The missiles initially follow a standard trajectory before veering off and performing steep dive maneuvers that allow them to slip past Patriot interceptors, sources told the Financial Times.

Ukraine has intercepted far fewer Russian ballistic missiles in recent months: in August, air defenses shot down 37 percent of them, compared with just six percent in September.

The Financial Times noted that the Patriot remains the only air defense system in Ukraine capable of intercepting Russian ballistic missiles.
