Flight data suggests Putin was in Sochi during deadly overnight drone attack

Russian President Vladimir Putin was likely in Sochi when the city came under attack by Ukrainian drones on Monday night, the independent outlet Agentstvo reports.

Agentstvo notes that the day before the attack, Putin had joined an emergency BRICS meeting by video link from Sochi, according to the Kremlin’s website. A few hours earlier, an Il-96-300PU aircraft from the Rossiya Special Flight Detachment with the tail number RA-96024 arrived in the city, Flightradar24 data indicates. This is the same plane the Russian president used for his trip to Alaska to meet with Donald Trump.

According to Krasnodar Governor Veniamin Kondratyev, the drone attack killed one person, a driver whose car was hit by falling shrapnel. He added that preliminary information suggested six private houses were damaged.

Russia’s Federal Air Transport Agency temporarily closed Sochi Airport overnight in response to the attack.

The Russian Defense Ministry said air defense forces shot down 31 Ukrainian drones in total during the night, including 15 over the Black Sea and two over the Krasnodar region.
