Trump threatens Russia with ‘economic war’ if it refuses to end war in Ukraine
U.S. President Donald Trump said Tuesday that Washington and Moscow will enter “an economic war” if the war in Ukraine continues, Bloomberg reports.
“It will not be a world war, but it’ll be an economic war, and an economic war is going to be bad,” Trump said during a meeting with cabinet members. “It’s going to be bad for Russia, and I don’t want that.”
At the same time, he suggested that Ukraine could also face consequences, saying: “Zelensky’s not exactly innocent either. It takes two people to tango, and I say that all the time – you’ve got to get them together.”
Trump also responded to Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s recent statement that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is not “legitimate” and therefore could not sign a peace deal.
“It doesn’t matter what they say,” Trump said. “Everybody’s posturing. It’s all bullshit.”
Donald Trump has repeatedly threatened Russia with sanctions if Moscow refuses to end its war in Ukraine. Earlier, he also warned of new economic restrictions if Russia didn’t agree to a ceasefire. However, after his meeting with Putin in Alaska on August 15, Trump dropped his demand for an immediate truce as a step toward a final peace agreement.
