Ramzan Kadyrov, the head of Russia’s Chechen Republic, nearly drowned while vacationing in the Turkish seaside town of Bodrum, according to multiple Turkish news outlets, including Haberler, Cumhuriyet, GZT, and Oksijen.

The incident reportedly occurred near a five-star hotel on the water. As he entered the sea, Kadyrov began gasping for air and, according to some reports, flailing in the water.

Hotel staff — or, by some accounts, the coast guard — called an ambulance. Kadyrov received first aid on the beach and was then taken to a private hospital. Media outlets say he is now in stable condition and not in danger.

According to the Russian outlet Agentstvo, local broadcaster Kent TV reported that Kadyrov had been staying at the Plaza Hotel and was taken to Bodrum’s American Hospital. On Friday, Kent TV published photos of what it described as “the Chechen leader’s motorcade,” including police cars and an ambulance leaving the hospital.

Agentstvo also noted that the most recent verified videos of Kadyrov were published on July 22, appearing on his social media accounts and in Telegram channels affiliated with Grozny TV and Grozny-Inform.

Kadyrov’s health has been deteriorating in recent years. Novaya Gazeta Europe has reported that since 2019, he has undergone regular medical treatments at the Central Clinical Hospital run by the Russian Presidential Administration due to a serious pancreatic condition.
