A Russian appellate court has jailed a 55-year-old trucker on suspicion of aiding the Ukrainian military in drone attacks on June 1 against several major Russian Air Force bases. Court records reviewed by Mediazona show that Mikhail Ryumin was arrested on June 2, one day after the attacks that Ukrainian officials dubbed “Operation Spiderweb.” He will face terrorism charges.

An anonymous colleague confirmed to Mediazona that Ryumin drove one of the trucks carrying the concealed drones. The source said Ryumin had recently changed jobs and accepted an order to deliver prefabricated house components from Chelyabinsk to the Ivanovo region in a rented truck. The colleague believes Ryumin could not have known what he was carrying, as modular buildings are transported in sealed containers.

In connection with Operation Spiderweb, Ukrainian officials claimed responsibility for drone strikes against Olenya air base in the Murmansk region, Belaya in the Irkutsk region, Ivanovo-Severny in the Ivanovo region, and Dyagilevo in the Ryazan region. The drones were concealed within the roof structures of prefabricated houses and transported across Russia on trucks. The drones were activated remotely when they came within range of the military airfields. Ukrainian officials claim the truck drivers acted as unwitting accomplices.

According to Western intelligence estimates, Operation Spiderweb damaged 40 Russian aircraft, with 10–13 destroyed. Moscow has denied that any aircraft were destroyed, though Russian military officials acknowledged that several were damaged.
