Iran has been sending secret diplomatic missions to Russia to seek assistance and expertise in developing its nuclear program, The Times reported on Monday, citing Western intelligence sources.
According to the newspaper, Ali Larijani, a senior advisor to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, made multiple flights to Moscow to speak with Russian officials in late 2024. In addition to assistance on nuclear issues, Iran is reportedly seeking the latest version of the Russian Su-35 fighter jet. It also wants to reinstall its air defense systems, which were destroyed by Israel last year.
Additionally, Tehran has reportedly requested helped with rearming Hezbollah, whose arsenal has been largely destroyed by Israel in recent months.
One source told The Times that because Russia depends on Iran for missiles and drones, “there is concern that Moscow is ready to cross previously drawn red lines on the Iranian nuclear [program].”
